Overview
The wish to bring pain to an end, to heal and be present for another person in their anguish, are all qualities we have all aspired to and embodied. But what happens when that is beyond your control? At the end of the day we wish to be useful but if that proves impossible, I guess we just have to wait.
I am no medical practitioner but getting to know different illnesses and what drugs to administer to each seems like a whole load of work. How people just entrust them to heal their loved ones is amazing. That smile that they wear when being discharged must be a treasured one. But what happens when you suffer from those that have no known cure but only take drugs to induce pain and prolong your life? Let's admit it; there's a pain to not having an assurance of being completely healthy but we can't really question it.
Jay lay on the hospital bed, confused. His whole family was around him. He blankly stared at all of them. His mother smiled amidst sobs as she looked at him. His little sister sat on the bed where he lay. His pregnant wife just watched, not showing so much emotion, probably for the unborn baby's safety. The others smiled and chatted from time to time. The doctor confirmed that he was ready for discharge, but will have to keep attending the doctor's appointment as scheduled.
Their journey back home was a long one. He talked less and stared more. "Congratulations", he said to the wife, not knowing she was his. Immediately her eyes became teary and she leaned on his shoulder and a pool of it came off. People kept introducing themselves to him and how they were related but none of it was ringing a bell. The incident had taken his whole life away. It was like being born again, only this time he was a big baby.
He attended all his therapy sessions but the only memory being triggered was him in a forest and later in a bathtub in a hotel, which he couldn't identify clearly. Every image appeared blurry. He could blow up when this happened by breaking things. His therapist allowed it, she said it was a way of letting off steam. He was angry for not knowing what happened to him. He wanted to remember his friends, family, colleagues and every memory he ever had. The doctors said the people who brought him there sought anonymity as they were just well wishers. Technically nothing could be done until he could identify the hotel. Everyone wanted to know what happened ;his family, the doctors, himself and the nation at large, since it had already hit the headlines.
Whatever happened remains a mystery that seem to stay unsolved for a while. All he ever wished was to unearth that whole ordeal. He didn't want to be the sickly dad to his child, who would be here in a month's time. Everyone helped him in trying to recall things but all their efforts were futile. Its true some wishes come true while others don't. Maybe it was just nature's way of changing his destiny. All attempts to remember things are threats to his health. He just needs his closure.
