TAKE THIS ROSE

Overview

What if one day you turn up next to the love of your life? Yea, like the real OG. The one who gets your quirks and jokes? The one who tells you things like: “Babe, tukule hii pesa tumalize kabisaaa!”

On the reals though, what if one day, you are idling around, trying to serve more meat at your friend’s wedding, and suddenly, somebody taps you on the back and says:

“I know we do not know each other, but, I am your soulmate.”

You turn back and there he is, this man, in all his glory. You stammer things you don’t even understand, and laugh at his nerve. I mean, who walks up to a girl and says things like that? He is surprised that you are not taking him seriously, because this is pretty serious, that’s what he says. And you are like,

“…wairraminute, what are you talking about?” I mean, I was just here serving meat, and now I have a soulmate? Haa…

He starts laughing. Now he thinks YOU are funny for not getting it. He tells me to just pause and stop overthinking. He tells me to just calm down, and then he takes my hand and leads me into a deserted tent. Le tme be honest and tell you this, chemistry is real, because the entire periodic table is running through my fingers like a thunderbolt. The real thitima, I tell ya. But I mean, who is this guy, though?

Because, lets be honest, it has been a while. It has been a while since I felt electricity like that. It has been a while since I saw such confidence in a guy. A guy who walks up to you, and without blinking, tells you that you are his soulmate…like whaddaaa??!! So, you decide to just flow with it and see where it leads.

He sits across from you and looks deep into your eyes. The food is forgotten for a moment, and your stomach rumbles. Funny thing is, you are not even embarrassed about it. He reaches out and cups your face in his hands. Those warm hands. And you know what they say about warm hands? They say that warm hands mean that you have a warm heart.

Now, if you know anything about me, you will know that I have had walls from here to Kasipul Kabondo. But this guy? He has breached every corner of my rules; sitting here, holding my face, and making me feel like I am floating somewhere in the universe. Making me feel light, like air, dancing to the beat of the universe.

“I have dreamed about you for a thousand nights.” He says.

Now, what do you say to that? What kind of response can you give to such an audacious statement from a guy you’ve only met five minutes ago? Heh? What you gonna say?

I do not say a thing, but tingles are flying like fireflies in my skin. Friends, allow me to sound like a ‘Mills and Boons’ novel, because I am going to say this: I felt goosebumps on my skin, and the sun was shining down on us. I notice the same goosebumps on his arm, as he takes my hand and kisses the back of it.

We sit in silence, and I am no longer hungry. The world fades away, and even though I can hear the wedding reception going on at a distant part of my perception, I am just here, looking deep into the eyes of a stranger. And my spirit knows: he is the one. I have known him all my life, even though I have never met him in the physical. We chose each other even before we were born of this world, and every step we have taken, every decision made has been bringing us here, to this moment where we would find each other.

It has been two hours that we have ben sitting here, and we have barely said a word. Because, really, what is to be said, when the love of your life sits next to you? What is to be said when you both know that the universe has aligned, and you are now ready for each other? What is to be said, when you know that this, this unknowable thing you have between yourselves is beyond vows, beyond rules and beyond anything known to this world?

Suddenly, a light rain starts falling, first as a sleet, and then it becomes a downpour that disperses the gathering. Night is falling, but we barely notice because our hearts are speaking to each other in the silence, saying all those things that have remained unsaid all these years. He picks a rose on the ground, and as the rain hits the tent, singing to us like an applause, he coos:

“Mwende, take this as a sign of my love for you…until forever”.

They would discuss how their husbands want to marry a second wife and how it is a good idea because the “small wife” would help around with the chores

I actually do admire their generosity when it comes to honoring and submitting to their husbands.
